Teaching Writing for Exams

It’s not easy to help students successfully write, especially in exam preparation classes. How can we help them gain confidence in writing? How can we motivate them to produce high-quality, high-scoring pieces in genres which they are not familiar with? How can we help them write efficiently when under the time pressure they will experience in an exam? In this workshop-based course, among other things, we will look at:

  • the different competences that underline effective written communication;
  • how to raise awareness of key features of important written genres, such as essays, reviews, online comments and emails;
  • how to work on style, informal and formal;
  • product, process and genre-based approaches to teaching writing;
  • the most useful strategies for writing for exams;
  • how best to offer feedback to learners – what we can feedback on, when and how.
