Teaching Academic Writing Skills

This 18-hour workshop is intended for tertiary level teachers working with undergraduates (BA / BSc) in English. The Academic Writing course has a double focus: it covers a review of the conventions of academic writing required in English, and will demonstrate how to make this content accessible to our students.

The workshop explores techniques for providing practice in writing in an academic style (language, phrases, grammar), and writing different paragraph types and articles (research questions, the abstract / the introduction / summary & conclusion). As a means of addressing plagiarism, the workshop also focuses on summary writing and paraphrasing, and will touch on recognised referencing systems. Participants will also be provided with links to outside sources for further academic material support.

Throughout the workshop, participants will be activity involved in tasks and exercises which, in turn, they will work on for adapting to their own classroom and subject environments.

Extra add-on: participants can opt to submit one piece of academic writing, within two weeks of the course finishing, for review and feedback from the tutor.

  • Conventions used in English in academic writing
  • Language input: phrases and exponents; grammar and punctuation
  • Requirements of an academic paper (layout; formal aspects)
  • Referencing systems: review & practice

The workshop is ideally run face-to-face over 3 days, but can also be run more extensively.
