We spend a high percentage of classroom time looking at language as an object of study: the present perfect lesson, for instance, or the second conditional lesson. Task-based Learning / Task-based Language Teaching (TBL / TBLT) is an approach to language teaching that boldly claims we’ve got things the wrong way around: that, in fact, we should be organising courses and lessons not around single language item but doing things with language: solving problems, sharing experiences, engaging in the real purposes we use language outside of the classroom. 

Task-based lessons are meaning-focused rather than based around learning individual structures taught one by one. On this 4-session online course we will explore the benefits of TBL and how to apply it in practice to ensure a motivating communicative learning experience for our students. Through demonstration, reflection and discussion, you will develop a deeper understanding of task-based learning in its various forms. The course is recommended for teachers of any level of experience who feel they have limited knowledge of TBL but who are keen to make their lessons more communication-rich. Areas covered include:  

• what is a task, and what is not a task, and why; different types of task;
• how to stage a task-based lesson, and the roles of the teacher and students;
• language focus in a TBL lesson, including dealing with emergent language;
• designing your own tasks and integrating these into your lessons;
• TBL in different contexts: online and face-to-face, with teenagers, with lower levels, with Business English learners;
